She could see life beneath its visible skin.
Every time I asked her HOW she’d flash a smile and say, “It’s all out there; you don’t notice.”
The morning after her eye surgery she took my hand with bandaged eyes and said, “See, gold rays are pouring down with divine splendour!”
I looked out of the nursing home window.
It was exactly as she said! I hadn’t noticed it.
Eight years ago, when packing for a relocation, my wife discovered a four-folded chit of paper tidily tucked in the lowest drawer of grandma’s closet.
It had a few lines penned with shaky fingers.
And it bore a date.... a night train, a nervy ride, a new beginning.... my first job....
She hadn’t given it to me.
I read it the first time that day in a whirlpool of misty emotions.
She had written in Kerala:
“In a world that’ll squirm to cramp your moves, steal your ideas, crush your hopes, choke your passions.... there’ll always be a flame burning; a dream that’ll never die.... a hope that’ll never get stifled.
You were born with wings to fly.... in a sky that begs you to soar into endless horizons....
What you’ll need is the grit and the gut to back yourself, lift your vision and spread your wings.
I’ll pray for you.”
An inexpressible surge of power gushed up my spine.
