Inventing a cigarette holder to a calculator of 140 kgs.......................
From inventing a cigarette holder to a calculator of 140 kgs - here's how Tadao Kashio with his brothers, started Casio
Casio is best known for 2 things today:
1. Electronic calculator
2. G-Shock watch, famous for being unbreakable
A) But how did the journey of Casio even start?
Casio's #history dates back to 1917 when Tadao Kashio's family moved to Tokyo from Kochi when he was 5. Kashio worked at a factory after completing school.
The factory owner recognised something in the young Kashio & told him to pursue higher education. He learnt engineering & mastered the skills to make household goods.
After masters, he set up his own #business in 1946 in Tokyo. And as a subcontractor he manufactured parts of microscopes and other technical equipments.
Kashio soon roped in his three younger brothers – Toshio, Kazuo and Yukio to work with him - this was the beginning of a great #beginning.
1. Toshio's significant contribution behind where Casio is today:
In the late 1940s, all calculator devices in Japan were noisy & slow. With his knowledge of electrical circuitry, Toshio found a way of only using electrical circuits to make the machine work smoother.
With this, the first domestically produced electric #calculator was completed in 1954.
But, there was one issue. Mass production of the calculator when the demand increased!
• Why?
~ Because the calculator was like a desktop weighing 140kg.
To meet soaring demand, the first Casio factory was built in 1965.This time, the brothers adopted electronic calculators that used vacuum tubes to reduce the weight.
B) G-Shock came into #existence based on a personal difficulty
Kikuo Ibe who worked as an engineer at Casio came up with the idea of the watch.
When one of his important watches given by his father in high school shattered into pieces after falling down, he wanted to make a watch that was impossible to break since then.
And it was at Casio that Kikuo fulfilled his dream & #invented G-Shock, which became a hit & a tough competition to Swiss watch brands.
Random accidents do lead to the existence of a well defined, popular brand sometimes. Agree?
